When I was small, you could drive down to the river and park more or less underneath it.
That was normal. My parents took us to swim in the Gardon river in the shadow of a Roman aqueduct, we rented kayaks and paddled under the arches, we ate our sandwiches on the pebbles, and none of us thought it remarkable. It was simply the river everybody went to.
It took me years to understand what we had been swimming under.
Photographs are no help, and that is part of the problem. There is nothing in the frame to measure it against: no houses, no road, no power lines, just three tiers of honey-coloured stone and a green river. It could be forty feet tall. It could be four hundred.
Then you walk out onto the lower tier, and you notice the people at the far end, and how small they look against the arches standing above them.
It is a hundred and sixty feet high — the tallest bridge the Romans ever built anywhere. Standing underneath it is the only way to know that, and I have watched people go quiet there more often than almost anywhere else we take them.
It was never a bridge
What you are looking at is a fragment. About nine hundred feet of a structure that ran for roughly thirty miles.
NĂ®mes, or Nemausus to the Romans, was a wealthy provincial city that wanted more water than it had. The Romans found what they needed at the Fontaine d’Eure, a spring near Uzès, and decided to bring it across the country to the city.
In a straight line, the two are only about twelve miles apart. The aqueduct they built runs nearly thirty miles, looping north and east around the limestone hills of the garrigue. They did not take the long way because they were lost. They took it because water only flows downhill, and the terrain gave them almost nothing to work with.
The Pont du Gard is simply the place where the valley of the Gardon got in the way.


The inch that makes it extraordinary
Here is the number that stops people.
Across those thirty miles, from the spring to the city, the aqueduct drops about forty-one feet. That is the entire fall, roughly the height of a four-storey building, spread over a marathon’s distance.
Across the Pont du Gard itself, the nine hundred feet you are standing under, the water channel falls about one inch.
Think about what that requires. Too steep, and the water arrives faster than the channel can carry it, tearing at the stone. Too shallow, and it stops, silts up and stagnates. The margin is almost nothing. And it was surveyed by men working with a plumb line, a wooden trough of water and a sighting frame. No instruments we would recognise, and no way to check their work until they opened the gates and found out.
It delivered millions of gallons a day to the fountains and baths of Nîmes, and it did it for something like four hundred years.
How they built it
The Pont du Gard went up in the middle of the first century AD, probably during the reign of Claudius, though you will still see it credited to Agrippa a few decades earlier. Estimates suggest perhaps a thousand men and around five years of work.
The stone came from a quarry a few hundred yards downstream, which is its own kind of engineering decision. The largest blocks weigh close to six tons, and they were hauled and levered into position with cranes turned by men walking inside treadwheels.
The arches are dry. No mortar. The stones were cut so precisely that they hold by weight and friction alone, and they have held through eight centuries of neglect, several floods that submerged the lower tier completely, and the removal of some of their own material by people who wanted building stone.
Look closely at the piers and you will see blocks jutting out of the face at intervals, apparently at random. They are not damage. They were left there deliberately to carry the wooden scaffolding, and nobody ever bothered to cut them off. Two thousand years later, the builders’ working platform is still attached to the thing.
Three tiers: six arches at the bottom, eleven in the middle, thirty-five along the top. The water ran through a covered channel on the very top level, a stone box barely wide enough for a man to walk along, which was the entire point of all that masonry underneath.


How it died
Slowly, and from the inside.
An aqueduct is a machine, and a machine needs maintaining. The Romans planned for this. At intervals along the route they built settling tanks and regulation basins, small stone chambers where the water could be held, diverted or shut off altogether so that a section of the channel could be drained and worked on dry. At the Nîmes end, the water arrived in a distribution basin called the castellum, which is still there today, where it was divided between the public fountains, the baths and a handful of private houses.
So the system could be stopped. And while it was stopped, crews walked the empty conduit, scraping out the limescale that the hard local water left behind on the walls.
When the administration that paid for those crews began to fall apart in the fourth century, the scraping stopped.
The deposits built up. In places they reached more than a foot thick, narrowing the channel until it choked. By around the sixth century, the water had stopped arriving in Nîmes, and it never started again.
What followed was worse than neglect. Local builders took the stone. Medieval lords ran a toll across the second tier and cut away part of the piers so that carts could pass, which weakened the structure so badly it nearly came down. For most of a thousand years, the greatest surviving monument of Roman Gaul was a quarry with a tollbooth on it.

Saved by admiration
Two things rescued it.
The first was practical. In the 1740s a road bridge was built alongside the lower tier, and having a use again meant having a reason to keep it standing.
The second was that people started to find it beautiful. Rousseau came in 1738 and wrote about wandering across the tiers feeling like an insect, wishing he had been born a Roman. Travelers began making detours to see it. By the 1850s, under Napoleon III, it was properly restored, and in 1985 it went onto the UNESCO World Heritage list.
It now receives well over a million visitors a year, which makes it one of the most visited monuments in France.
What has changed, and what hasn’t
You cannot park under the arches any more, and that is the right decision.
The site is properly looked after now. Cars stay up top in a real parking lot, there is a flat, short walk down to the monument, there are proper toilets, and the museum is genuinely good. All of it is an improvement, and I say so as someone still a little nostalgic for the old chaos.
But the part I care about has not changed at all. Go in July or August and you will find French families spread along the banks for the entire day: parasols, coolers, children shrieking in the shallows, grandparents in folding chairs, all of them treating a two-thousand-year-old wonder of the ancient world as though it were the local beach.
We call it a river day. Americans are often surprised by it, and I love watching that surprise. Nobody is being disrespectful. It is simply that here, history is not kept behind glass. It is the place where you go swimming.
And the kayaks are still there. Paddling downstream and passing underneath is, I promise you, the best possible angle on the thing.



What to do when you get there
Walk out on the lower tier. Free, flat, and the only way to feel the height.
Cross to the other bank and look back. The two sides give completely different views, and most visitors only ever see one.
The river. Swimming is allowed and encouraged. Jumping off the bridge is not, and has not been for years.
Something to eat. There is a proper restaurant on the site, and a café for coffee and ice cream, which matters more than it sounds on a hot afternoon.
The garrigue paths. Wild thyme, rosemary, holm oak, cicadas, and an olive tree by the entrance that is around a thousand years old.

The climb to the top tier, Be warned that there are a lot of stairs. The path goes up from the site to the level of the highest tier, where you can look through the gate into the water channel itself. To go inside it and walk the covered conduit the water actually ran through, you need to book the official guided tour. Neither is necessary to enjoy the day, but it is worth knowing the option is there.
How to visit
Getting in. Access to the site is free. You pay for parking, currently €9 per vehicle regardless of how many people are in it, and separately for the museum and the guided tour. Check current prices and hours before you go, since they shift by season.
When to come. Spring and autumn, without much argument. April through June and September into October give you warm days, manageable crowds and the countryside at its best. The stone turns gold in low light, so if you are travelling with a camera, plan for early morning or the last two hours before sunset. In July and August it is hot, busy and full of families, which is either exactly what you want or exactly what you don’t.
Winter note. The museum, cinema and exhibition spaces close for roughly four months over winter, and shut on Monday mornings for maintenance year-round. The monument itself stays open.
Accessibility. Better than you might expect. The approach is flat and paved, and the cultural buildings have lifts. The one exception is the third-tier tour, which involves eighty steps and rough ground on the way back. How long. An hour if you only want to see it. Half a day if you want the far bank, the paths, the river and lunch at the restaurant. A full day if you bring a picnic and a towel and treat it the way the French do.
What to pair it with. Avignon and NĂ®mes are both close, and which one you choose depends on what you are after. Avignon for the Palace of the Popes, the ramparts and the bridge in the song. NĂ®mes for more Rome: the amphitheatre, the Maison CarrĂ©e, and the castellum where this aqueduct’s water finally arrived. If you are staying in Le Grau-du-Roi, as our travelers do, NĂ®mes is a direct train ride away and costs about a euro each way, which makes it a great post-tour day trip.
Why they bothered
Here is the part I like most.
Nîmes did not need this. The city had wells and a spring of its own, and nobody was dying of thirst. What the aqueduct paid for was baths, public fountains and water running in the street: comfort, and display, and a way of saying that Rome had arrived and intended to stay.
So they built a thirty-mile machine, accurate to an inch, out of stone cut so well it needed no mortar, largely so that a provincial city in southern Gaul could have nicer plumbing.
They built it to last, because it did not occur to them that it would ever need to stop. Nobody standing on that scaffolding in the year 50 imagined an end to the empire that had sent them there. They were building the permanent world.
The empire went — the aqueduct is still standing over a river full of swimming children, and it is still, two thousand years later, the most astonishing thing most of our travelers see all week.
