Art of the Razeteurs: Course Camarguaise in the South of France

Camargue’s Wildest Tradition

A Tradition Unlike Any Other

La Course Camarguaise is one of France’s most surprising and captivating traditions, a bull sport where the bull, not the man, is the true star. In the sun-drenched arenas of the Camargue, the powerful biòu (Occitan for “bull”) charges with intelligence and precision while white-clad Camargue bullfighters, known as razeteurs (French athletes who remove ribbons from the bull’s horns), sprint in to snatch tiny ribbons tied between his horns. It’s fast, daring, and rooted in deep respect: unlike Spanish corridas, no harm comes to the bull, and his name is the one printed in bold on the posters.

What makes this tradition extraordinary is how seamlessly it blends athleticism, heritage, and emotion. The crowd isn’t there for violence; they’re there to celebrate the bull’s bravery and the razor-sharp agility of the razeteurs. With a history dating back to 1402 and more than 300,000 spectators each year, the sport remains a living symbol of Camargue identity, bringing villages together from spring through autumn.

The Bull as the Star

At the heart of every competition is the biòu himself. Far from being a mere participant, he is the undisputed hero of the arena. Raised in the marshlands of the Camargue and carefully selected for his speed, intelligence, and temperament, a great bull can become a regional celebrity. The most legendary animals are remembered long after their careers end, their names passed down through generations and spoken with the same reverence reserved for sporting champions.

Unlike many other bull traditions around the world, the Camargue bull returns to the arena again and again throughout his career. With each appearance, he develops a reputation among spectators and competitors alike. Some become famous for their explosive speed, others for their ability to anticipate the movements of the razeteurs and defend their ribbons with remarkable cunning.

The Art of the Razeteur

Facing the bull are the razeteurs, whose skill lies not in strength but in precision and nerve. Dressed entirely in white and armed only with a small metal hook known as a crochet, they must dash toward a charging bull and remove the prizes attached between his horns in a matter of seconds.

Timing is everything. A successful pass requires the razeteur to approach at full speed, make a precise grab, and escape behind the arena’s protective barriers before the bull can change direction. The challenge demands exceptional athleticism, combining sprinting speed, agility, courage, and split-second decision-making.

A Competition Built on Respect

One of the most distinctive aspects of La Course Camarguaise is its emphasis on respect for the animal. The objective is not to dominate or injure the bull but to outwit him. Spectators cheer not only for successful razeteurs but also for bulls that prove especially clever and difficult to approach.

In many ways, the biòu is competing just as much as the athletes. A bull that successfully protects his ribbons and repeatedly frustrates the competitors can emerge as the true crowd favorite. His bravery, intelligence, and fighting spirit are celebrated as essential parts of the spectacle.

A Festival Atmosphere

A day at the arena is about far more than the competition itself. Across the villages of the Camargue, race days bring communities together in celebration. Families gather in the stands, cafés fill with conversation, and local traditions take center stage.

The atmosphere is festive and deeply rooted in regional culture. Music, parades, and community events often accompany the competitions, creating a sense of occasion that extends beyond the arena walls. For many residents, attending a course is not simply entertainment but a cherished ritual that connects generations.

Deep Roots in the Camargue

The tradition is inseparable from the landscape that gave birth to it. The Camargue, a vast region of wetlands, lagoons, and open plains in southern France, is famous for its white horses, pink flamingos, and black bulls. For centuries, local cattle herders known as gardians (Camargue cowboys) have raised and cared for the animals that eventually enter the arena.

Their way of life has shaped the culture of the region, and La Course Camarguaise remains one of its most visible expressions. The sport reflects a unique relationship between people, animals, and place—one that continues to define Camargue identity today.

Why Visitors Love It

For travelers, La Course Camarguaise offers a rare opportunity to experience a living tradition that feels both thrilling and authentic. The excitement is immediate: the thunder of hooves on sand, the sudden bursts of speed, and the tension that accompanies every attempt to claim a ribbon.

Yet what leaves the strongest impression is the respect at the heart of the event. Rather than focusing on violence or conquest, the tradition celebrates courage, skill, and mutual admiration. It offers a glimpse into a region where heritage remains deeply woven into everyday life and where the biòu, not the bullfighter, remains the true star of the show.
